The Landscaper is responsible for enhancing and maintaining OMSI property to create a welcoming atmosphere for community and staff.


Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Maintains grounds on an 18 acre campus, including formal lawns, planter beds, bioswales, living walls, and parking lots to OMSI standards. Responsibilities include-but are not limited to-the following:
    • Mowing, edging, and fertilizing of lawns. Applies non-toxic solutions for weed control;
    • Seasonal pruning of vegetation and lower tree canopies;
    • Daily pickup of branches, vegetation ,and larger trash to maintain appearance levels;
    • Monitors and programs irrigation systems, makes repairs, and winterizes systems;
    • Trimming property vegetation with an emphasis on maintaining fence and property lines;
    • Maintains drainage systems, vegetation, and filter media;
    • Conducts soil tests and apply fertilizer accordingly;
    • Maintains artificial turf appearance and treatments applications;
    • Assists with graffiti removal and maintains parking lots.
  • Regularly maintains and ensures proper storage and safety of power tools and lifts;
  • Communicates with the Senior Director of Facilities Operations about daily/weekly schedule needs based on workload and efficiencies. Makes seasonal recommendations and routine schedules;
  • Assists in contracting services such as tree pruning and weed control, and assists project monitoring.

Working Conditions

  • This position is non-exempt, paid hourly;
  • This position is regular full-time scheduled for 40 hours/week:
    • Requires working onsite at the museum location;
    • Requires work on some weekends, holidays, and/or evenings for improvement projects and inclement weather response.
  • Physical Demands: 15% sitting, 35% standing, 50% lifting/carrying/pushing 5-80 lbs:
    • You must be fully vaccinated and boosted for COVID-19 or qualify for an accommodation under the ADA for medical or religious reasons;
    • This position requires regular lifting, including the ability to bend, stoop, crawl, and reach multiple times a day for long periods of time;
    • Must have spatial awareness, especially when handling equipment.

    • Loud (examples: metal can manufacturing department, large earth-moving equipment)

Secondary Job Responsibilities

Secondary responsibilities include-but are not limited to-the following:

  • Communicates with property tenants about maintenance and grounds issues, and applicable solutions in collaboration with the Senior Director of Facilities Operations;
  • Provides input for estimated labor and equipment supply costs;
  • Collaborates with SOLVE staff to lead volunteers and instructions on planting projects.

    • Ability to work with and repair irrigation systems, systems operation, and scheduling;
    • Knowledge of turf and plant care best practices and procedures, including basic plant and tree identification, and pruning practices;
    • Planning and execution abilities to contribute to a sustainable grounds maintenance program;
    • Ability to self schedule, provide great customer service, and operate with self supervision;
    • Proficiency with basic computer skills, such as working with emails and generating reports;
    • Self driven and passionate with regard to performing quality work;
    • Basic counting and math abilities.

PREFERENCES:

  • Developed knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion principles;
  • Proficient or native fluency in a second language (non-English).

Education & Work Experience

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum 3 years of commercial landscaping experience in the landscape/groundskeeping industries;
  • Demonstrated experience working with and repairing irrigation systems.

PREFERENCES:

  • Experience working with volunteers;
  • Commercial pruning and planting experience.

Additional Requirements/Preferences; Including Licenses and Certifications

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid driver's license;
  • Pre-employment checks, such as criminal background check, reference checks, and requirements in the MVR Policy including passing Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check.

PREFERENCES:

  • Scissor and/or High Lift Certification;
  • Landscape Management Certifications;
  • Restricted Use Pesticides (RUPs) Licensure.
