The Experience Design Manager leads the co-creation of inclusive experiences and exhibit engagements that align with OMSI's brand values of equity, diversity, accessibility, inclusion, fiscal responsibility, innovation and scientific accuracy. This includes: advocating for, and designing with, greater community input and representation; infusing physical and virtual spaces with human-centered design principles to deliver high quality content development and design; an inspiring visitor experience; and facilitating productive creative sessions with internal and external stakeholders. This role balances both creative production and management of the Experience Design Team and their creative production.


Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Experience Design Team Leadership:
    • Manages concept development and design prototyping for experiences scaling from individual exhibit components to master planning whole hall design, and participates in prototyping exhibition designs;
    • Manages the experience design team to create compelling stories and experiences that deliver learning and experience outcomes through spatial design, exhibitry, and technology within feasible budget and timelines;
    • Establishes educational and experiential outcomes for developing experiences. Evaluates existing exhibits and develops strategies for remediation to improve outcomes;
    • Works with Creative Director and Project Managers to source external vendors to expand experience design capacities as needed by projects.
    • Evaluates current practices and stays current with professional standards, exhibit theory, techniques, and technologies to develop accessible STEAM experiences that meet the needs of diverse audiences and uphold high standards of scientific accuracy;
    • Supports continual improvement of processes, tools, training, and best practices in exhibition creation and experience design in support of OMSI's creative team while balancing resources;
    • Develops, drives and contributes to ROM costing in concept phase, design feasibility in schematic design phase, and cost refinement in later phases;
    • Collaborates with Production on cost estimating in design development; ensures design documentation delivered to Production staff or external partners/ vendors supports the next production phases of the projects.
  • Leads and participates in the development, design, and implementation of strategies that enhance visitor engagement and learning and Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) priorities/goals at OMSI:
    • Develops and implements cross-cultural stakeholder engagement processes to co-create designs in collaboration with architects, landscape architects, experience developers, and subject matter experts. Facilitates working sessions, synthesizes information into key deliverables, and leads milestone presentations;
    • Develops and supports strategic partnerships and content partnerships. Collaborates with community partners and groups in advancing their respective goals and projects;
    • Collaborates with content research and development for OMSI experiences with various interdepartmental staff, including operating within dotted-line reporting as determined by project-specific roles and responsibilities;
    • Creates, manages, and systematizes codesign processes that encourage internal stakeholder and external community partner collaboration, with an emphasis on culturally responsive and inclusive content creation;
    • Actively advances and incorporates OMSI's Equity Action Framework, Values, and Strategic Plans into divisional priorities;
    • Leads reflective practices to improve professional practices and engagement value of experiences.
  • Design Personnel Management:
    • Manages staff and provides mentorship and coaching to enhance individual and organizational knowledge and capabilities;
    • Fosters a collaborative team environment, with an emphasis on creating high quality products;
    • Continuously identifies and assesses skill and knowledge needs, and allocates future personnel and external resources to meet the needs of strategic initiatives and projects;
    • Prepares and facilitates the development and implementation of staff work plans, and provides regular 1-on-1s, check-ins, regular team meetings, and performance reviews.

Working Conditions

  • This position is exempt, paid salaried;
  • This position is regular full-time scheduled for 40 hours/week;
  • This position requires working onsite at the museum location;
  • You must be fully vaccinated and boosted for COVID-19 or qualify for an accommodation under the ADA for medical or religious reasons;
  • This position requires occasional travel outside of the Portland Metro area, and the ability to work on some weekends and/or evenings to meet project deadlines or milestones;

Secondary Job Responsibilities

Secondary responsibilities include-but are not limited to-the following:

  • Works with the Creative Director and Project Managers to manage project and sub-division budgets (~$250k - $400k);
  • Disseminates project findings via presentations and posters at conferences and professional meetings, publication or on-line postings, and workshops or webinars;
  • Contributes to and/or participates in process improvements for projects and initiatives;
  • Supports solicitation and stewardship activities in support of the Development team;
  • Manages the implementation of grant-funded projects with Project Managers.

    • Ability to synthesize abstract concepts and learning goals into interactive exhibits, with an emphasis on accessibility, inclusion, feasibility, construction, function, safety, durability, and user experience;
    • Advanced knowledge of and ability to effectively use creative software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, or equivalent software;
    • Advanced knowledge of and ability to use 3D modeling software such as Sketchup, Autodesk Fusion 360, or equivalent software;
    • Advanced knowledge of and ability to use Autodesk Revit or equivalent software;
    • Excellent writing, creative, and design palette/aesthetics, in support of the development and implementation of exhibits and interactives;
    • Ability to maintain knowledge of exhibit history, trends, and industry;
    • Ability to create and present engaging content with a population of learners of diverse ages and backgrounds in a culturally responsive way, with an emphasis on diversity, equity, inclusion, and sustainability;
    • Ability to translate scientific and educational research into personal and departmental practices;

  • Supervision and Leadership:
    • Ability to model and support a positive team dynamic with an emphasis on coaching and mentoring paid and unpaid staff using asset-based feedback;
    • Ability to manage budgets, estimate labor time and costs for projects, and manage employee and vendor workloads across multiple and simultaneous projects;
    • Ability to maintain and support professional relationships with community and industry partners.

PREFERENCES:

  • Ability to read wiring diagrams and schematics;
  • Working knowledge of drafting and mechanical engineering concepts and methods;
  • Familiarity with CNC machinery and operation;

Education & Work Experience

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Portfolio with examples of exhibit development experience and/or contributions;
  • At least 3 years of cumulative experience with increasing responsibility:
    • Experience managing and collaborating with teams in designing programmatic elements and/or interactive exhibits, with a focus on human-centered design;
    • Experience managing the design of exhibits and participating in the exhibit development process, which requires knowledge base across many disciplines, which include concepting, design, construction, UX/UI experience, exhibit design, safety, accessibility and theory.
    • Experience working effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and talents in professional work environments, with an emphasis on collaborative projects and deliverables;
    • Experience collaborating with creative partners or content experts in research and technical capacities;
    • Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced collaborative environment with stringent and overlapping deadlines;
    • Experience with project management and/or coordination in service of short and long-term projects and deliverables;
    • Experience managing the design of exhibits and participating in the exhibit development process requires a very deep knowledge base across many disciplines, which include concepting, design, construction, UX/UI experience, exhibit design, safety, accessibility and theory;
    • Examples of effective communication with a variety of internal and external stakeholders in a work environment, as well as fostering strong and lasting community partnerships and relationships.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience with supervising and supporting the professional growth and development of staff and/or volunteers.

PREFERENCES:

  • Academic degree with a concentration in any of the following: user-centered design, product design, UX design, installation art, interior architecture, human factors design, or similar;
  • Experience leading projects with programmatic elements or interactive exhibits;
  • Experience working with volunteers.
