The Lead Custodian plans and schedules work assignments, provides supervision, and training to custodial staff, as assigned by the Custodial Operations Manager. They also provide custodial and support services for all OMSI facilities, activities, and events. Custodial staff serve to help ensure that OMSI provides a clean, safe, and healthy environment for all guests and staff.


Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Perform general custodial services, utilizing best practice for safety, efficiency, and environmental concerns;
  • Set-up and teardown OMSI events and assist with office moves;
  • Clean and stock restrooms on a daily basis, ensuring proper sanitary conditions and good appearance;
  • Responsible for waste disposal throughout the OMSI campus, including interior and exterior spaces;
  • Collaborate with other departments such as OMSI's Maintenance, Events, and IT;
  • Pick up facilities-related equipment, supplies, and other tools as assigned by the Custodial Operations Manager;
  • Lead and supervise the Custodial team under the direction of the Custodial Operations Manager:
    • Serve as the main point of contact for the custodial staff;
    • Monitor, coordinate, and direct the quality and accuracy of work performed by custodial staff;
    • Responsible for assisting with the recruitment, training, mentorship, and supervision of the custodial team to build a supportive and collaborative environment;
    • Review BEOs and help with coordinating and assigning staff to perform setup;
    • Lead regular custodial check-ins.

Working Conditions

  • This position is non-exempt, paid hourly;
  • This position is special project, full-time scheduled for 40 hours/week;

  • This position requires flexibility, working weekends, holidays, and evenings.
  • Physical Demands: 5% sitting, 75% standing, 20% lifting/carrying/pushing 50 lbs;
  • Vision Demands include:
    • Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more)
  • Environmental Demands include:
    • Wet or humid conditions (non-weather)
    • Extreme heat (non-weather)
    • Outdoor weather conditions
    • Work near moving mechanical parts
    • Work in high, precarious places

    • Toxic or caustic chemicals
  • Noise Levels include:
    • Quiet (examples: library, private office)
    • Moderate (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic)

  • Custodial Skills:
    • Working knowledge of the proper methods, techniques, materials, disinfectants, tools and equipment used in modern custodial work;
    • Working knowledge with operating and maintaining custodial equipment;
    • Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve custodial-related issues;
    • Ability to learn and follow safety and protocol regulations.

PREFERENCES:

  • Ability to use a pressure washer.

Education & Work Experience

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Prior custodial-related experience;
  • Demonstrated experience and/or the ability to lead and supervise a team of custodial professionals.
