The Staff Accountant I is responsible for specific accounting tasks in support of the Accounting team, and special projects as assigned. Primary accounting tasks include the preparation of month-end journal entries, the review and verification of daily deposit transactions, reconciliation of various general ledger, income, and expense accounts, and special projects as assigned by the Controller. The Staff Accountant I should be fully knowledgeable of the accounting software being used and be capable of performing a month-end close.


Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Manages daily cash deposits and summaries;
  • Compiles and analyzes financial information and schedules for the preparation of entries to accounts, such as general ledger accounts and documenting business transactions;
  • Prepares, enters, and posts month-end and year-end journal entries;
  • Reconciles general ledger accounts, including identifying outstanding items, research, and correcting concerns;
  • Maintains and ensures compliance with accounting internal control procedures;
  • Support and directly contribute to year-end audit, primarily for accounts in portfolio but also in other support roles (pulling invoice copies, documentation, auditor correspondence).

Working Conditions

  • This position is exempt, paid salaried;
  • This position is regular full-time scheduled for 40 hours/week;

Secondary Job Responsibilities

Provide support to the Finance team and department as assigned by the Controller. Secondary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assists with the development, documentation and maintenance of written accounting procedures;
  • Assist in one-off accounting projects as requested by the Controller, such as data analyzation of accounting records.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Working knowledge and ability to effectively analyze, troubleshoot, and mitigate accounting variances and ensure compliance with financial reporting and other compliance procedures, in accordance with OMSI standards and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP);
  • Developed time management skills, with an emphasis on accounting processes and schedules;
  • Ability to effectively handle multiple tasks, often with overlapping and time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Working knowledge of and/or ability to learn Financial Edge or other financial software;
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office Excel and Google Suite Sheets;
  • Exercises sound judgement while upholding high integrity and ethical standards;
  • Excellent attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy;
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to pivot between individual and team work;
  • Ability to adhere to confidentiality, protocol, and community agreements;
  • Ability to model and support a positive team dynamic with paid and unpaid staff.

PREFERENCES:

  • Developed knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion principles;
  • Proficient or native fluency in a second language (non-English);
  • Experience in Salesforce, or other CRM software.

Education & Work Experience

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in an industry related to accounting, business administration, or finance:
    • Interdisciplinary program with an emphasis on core/foundational knowledge of accounting principles;
    • Experience utilizing appropriate accounting or tracking systems.
  • Demonstrated experience or ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and talents in professional work environments;
