The OMSI Outdoor Prep Camp Cook are essential community members of passionate educators and learners. They provide more than just food; they offer thoughtful meals, comfort, and nourishment for all. The Prep Camp Cook prepares ingredients necessary for breakfast, lunch and dinner for the OMSI Outdoors programs at the Coastal Discovery Center at Camp Gray in Newport, Oregon.

Participate in programs/initiatives to enhance corporate culture, such as:

  • Working effectively with and supporting volunteers throughout the organization
  • Supporting OMSI's Total Guest Experience (TGE)/Customer Service mission & objectives in daily job performance, including diversity initiatives
  • Professionally represent OMSI with all internal and external contacts with appropriate appearance, action and communication.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Prepare ingredients quickly and efficiently for large school and summer camp groups at designated times.
  • Wash dishes used in meal preparation and as needed.
  • Maintain Oregon Health Code and American Camping Association standards in handling, cooking, and storing of food.

Working and Living Conditions:

  • This position is non-exempt, paid hourly
  • This position is seasonal, scheduled for 20 hours/week.
  • You must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or qualify for an accommodation under the ADA for medical or religious reasons;
  • Scheduled to work the months of February - October.
  • Regular shifts include either a morning shift or afternoon/evening shift; Morning shifts are Tuesday - Friday 7:00am-11:00am and afternoon/evening shifts are Monday-Thursday 3:00pm-8pm.
  • Must be able to work independently and manage time with minimal guidance.
  • Work environment includes hot surfaces and ovens, open flames, sharp knives and toxic or caustic chemicals
  • Noise level is very quiet (examples: forest trail, isolation booth for hearing test) to loud (examples: metal can manufacturing department, large earth-moving equipment).
  • Vision requirements include close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), color vision (the ability to recognize the colors of traffic signals and devices showing standard red, green, and amber), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point), depth and perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distance and spatial relationships), and ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus).
  • Must have visual, perceptual, cognitive and judgment ability to: recognize and respond verbally to health and safety concerns and to deal appropriately with any improper behavior.
  • Physical Demands: 5% Sitting, 50% Standing, 25% Walking 20% Lifting/Carrying/Pushing/Pulling Pounds 5-50 lbs.

Secondary Functions:

  • Cooks meals when Camp Cooks are unavailable for a shift;
  • Properly dispose of food waste and recycling: assist with hauling food waste and recycling into town;
  • Coordinate with camp cook on menu and inventory;
  • Wash, dry, and fold kitchen laundry;
  • Bake desserts and prepare snack daily;
  • Regularly clean all areas, coolers, pantries, surfaces, and equipment;
  • Actively integrate diversity, equity, access and inclusion in all areas;



  • Understanding of food safety, protocol, and regulations;
  • Ability to operate kitchen equipment and tools safely;
  • Strong customer service skills;


  • Working knowledge of preparing vegetables and meats for cooking.
  • Cooking meals and baking from scratch;
  • Experience packing food in coolers and dry bins for travel or camping;

Education & Work Experience:


  • High School Diploma or Equivalent;
  • Experience in a commercial kitchen;


  • Minimum of 1 year of cooking in a commercial kitchen;

Additional Requirements/Preferences; Including Licenses and Certifications:


  • Current Oregon Food Handler Card;
  • Must be at least 18 years old to operate, repair or clean power-driven food slicers, grinders, choppers and mixers.
  • Pre-employment checks, such as criminal background check, reference checks, and American Camp Association (ACA) background checks (& on annual basis).


  • Current CPR and first aid certification
