The Senior Director of Brand Marketing develops and implements strategies to build our brand, create public awareness, position OMSI as a philanthropic priority, and generate public interest in new and existing programs and long-term strategic plans. This position works with leaders across the organization to develop well thought-out and effective marketing plans to achieve OMSI's objectives. The Senior Director of Brand Marketing provides management and leadership for staff in support of creative marketing and communication strategies, programs, and initiatives to expand the museum's audiences and revenues across multiple business lines.


Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic-level oversight of marketing campaigns and strategic communication efforts:
    • Oversee the design, production, and placement of advertising and marketing communications. Assets include graphic design, public relations, web, social media, mailing lists, advertising, media buying, photography, video production, and copywriting;
    • Ensure integrated marketing and communication strategies support and reflect the OMSI brand. Implement processes to achieve consistency in messaging and assist internal partners use the brand story, promise, and values as a foundation across all communications, programs, and initiatives;
    • Identify new business and marketing opportunities-both within and outside the organization-that align with and support OMSI's strategic plan and brand;
    • Develop, implement, and manage marketing metrics and audience data to optimize OMSI's outreach to both existing and potential audiences. Identify trends and evaluate strategies to reach new audiences;
    • Ensure marketing and communication practices align with OMSI's mission, values, and goals to advance Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) within the organization and in service to our communities.
  • Develop and lead OMSI's annual and long-term strategic marketing plans:
    • Collaborate with leaders and staff across OMSI as a team member in executing OMSI's strategic priorities and projects;
    • Work with the VP of Marketing & Retail to develop and manage the Marketing budget (~$1.25 million annual budget), with the responsibility of supporting the generation of over ~$18 million in annual revenue;
    • Coordinate with OMSI Leadership and Managers in positioning the museum's offerings to meet their needs and achieve OMSI's financial and mission goals.
  • Lead the Marketing Team. Tasks include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Practice leadership that cultivates a cohesive, creative, and inclusive working environment;
    • Challenge and inspire the team to achieve success by promoting passion, imagination, and innovation while embracing diversity, teamwork and a commitment to organizational values;
    • Oversee, within the team, the integration of various external marketing partners to ensure the efficient and effective execution of marketing and communication efforts;
    • Establish regular 1-on-1s and check-ins with team members. Create and support individual and departmental work plans; provide coaching, feedback and developmental opportunities.

Working Conditions

  • This position is exempt-paid, salaried;
  • This position is regular full-time scheduled for 40 hours/week;
  • This position will require working on some weekends, holidays, and/or evenings;
  • This position requires an on-site presence and is not a remote work opportunity;

Secondary Job Responsibilities

Secondary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Work with and/or supervise design/creative-related external partners and consultants as needed;
  • Support OMSI leadership in the development and management of internal and external crisis communications;
  • Serve as an OMSI spokesperson when needed, particularly in relation to the marketing of OMSI events and experiences;
  • Cultivate external partnerships that broaden marketing representation, drive traffic, and support OMSI's community-based efforts;
  • Participate in community events and activities, such as exhibition openings and OMSI's annual Gala;
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned by the VP of Marketing & Retail.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Business Practices:
    • Excellent interpersonal, written, and presentation communication skills that encourage collaboration, team-building, and accountability with people of diverse talents and backgrounds;
    • Developed organizational, strategic planning, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with an emphasis on exercising initiative and good judgement;
    • Advanced knowledge of budgeting, planning, goal setting, and the utilization of metrics;
    • Ability to clearly present and communicate information to diverse audiences, maintain audience attention, and respond to audience needs. Ability to present project and numerical data effectively;
    • Ability to effectively manage and track multiple projects simultaneously with stringent and often overlapping deadlines;
    • Ability to effectively pivot between individual and team-based work with an excellent attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy;
    • High proficiency with Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office;

  • Marketing Knowledge and Strategic Leadership:
    • Developed project management and budgeting skills, in support of overseeing and executing marketing initiatives;
    • Advanced knowledge of general/consumer marketing strategy, campaign execution, and branding;
    • Deep understanding of website development, search engine optimization, pay per click advertising, mobile, social media, and email campaign management;
    • Excellent writing, creative, and design palette/aesthetics, in support of the development and implementation of marketing materials;
    • Ability to effectively utilize sales and project management software, spreadsheets, and/or database systems;
    • Working knowledge of best practices in marketing professional development-mentorship, leadership opportunities for rising professionals, and identifying areas of growth and improvement.

PREFERENCES:

  • Developed knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion principles;
  • Proficient or native fluency in a second language (non-English).

Education & Work Experience

REQUIREMENTS:

  • At least 7 years of cumulative experience with increasing responsibility:
    • Experience leading and advancing organizational brand(s) with intentional and innovative marketing strategies and techniques;
    • Experience with change management initiatives;
    • Expertise in planning integrated marketing campaigns in support of organizational key outcome indicators (KOIs);
    • Successful and demonstrated experiences leading and supervising marketing/creative team(s);
    • Proven track record of developing mutually beneficial strategic partnerships;
    • Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced collaborative environment with stringent and overlapping deadlines;
    • Demonstrated experience working effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and talents in professional work environments;
    • Demonstrated experience synthesizing, analyzing, and making strategic marketing recommendations for optimization of various campaigns.

PREFERENCES:

  • Experience selecting and implementing enterprise-level tools;
  • Experience working with volunteers.
