Under the supervision of the Custodial Operations Manager, the Lead Custodian plans and schedules work assignments, provides supervision and training to OMSI custodial staff as assigned, and personally performs custodial tasks and other related duties as assigned.

The Lead Custodian participates in programs/initiatives to enhance corporate culture, such as:

  • Working effectively with and supporting volunteers throughout the organization
  • Supporting OMSI's Total Guest Experience (TGE)/Customer Service mission & objectives in daily job performance, including diversity initiatives

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Under the supervision of the Custodial Operations Manager, manage a custodial shift team to create a positive culture focused on continual improvement, efficiency, accountability, and safety.
  • Manage custodial staffing and daily attendance, coordinate call outs, vacation time, and additional coverage as needed, and communicate decisions/needs with Custodial Operations Manager and take necessary steps to cover staff shortages.
  • Lead by example in completing custodial and event duties in a timely, high-quality and professional manner.
  • Perform custodial duties and assign and delegate daily work duties focused on guest experience as a priority. Provide exceptional eye to detail regarding daily, weekly, biweekly and monthly tasks, so that museum is guest ready upon opening and throughout the day. Areas of focus include:
    • Main Lobby cleanliness, trash, etc.
    • Front Plaza cleanliness, trash, leaves, etc.
    • Restrooms cleaning and stocking
    • Glass and touchpoints
    • Floors
    • Staff areas, break rooms, offices, and loading dock
    • Event support, including furniture set-up and preparation of rooms
    • Office moves support, including moving furniture
    • Tent setups, pressure washing, and other outside element duties as assigned
  • Custodial support for field trip groups, camp-ins, and other guests as assigned
  • General custodial, maintenance and grounds keeping as assigned utilizing best practice for safety, efficiency, and environmental concerns.
  • Meet with other shift Leads and Facilities Management on a bi-weekly basis to coordinate planning for the department and for special projects as directed by Custodial Operations Manager and the Facilities Management team.
  • Check in with prior shift Lead to gather daily information regarding tasks, duties, events, and daily needs. Input any important information into daily journal (event pros/cons, things to know or watch for, kudos, etc.). Communicate productivity and needs to other shift Leads, and/or Custodial Operations Manager.
  • Report needed museum wide repair work through work orders and communication to supervisor.
  • Train employees on custodial practices, safety, and equipment use/care/maintenance.
  • Maintain supply closets and assist in the management of supplies, which includes monitoring consumption and anticipating order requirements.
  • Ensure proper care and safety in the operation and maintenance of equipment.
  • Act as department liaison in the absence of the Custodial Operations Manager and Senior Director of Facilities Operations.
  • This position is non-exempt, paid hourly
  • This position is regular full-time, scheduled for 40 hours/week.

Working Conditions:

  • Requires a 5-day work week, such as working 8 AM - 4:30 PM, 3 PM - 11:30 PM, 10 PM - 6:30 AM or a similar 8-hour shift, including weekends and holidays.

  • Work environment includes wet or humid conditions (non-weather), work near moving mechanical parts, work in high, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, vibration.
  • Noise level ranges from moderate (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic) to loud (examples: metal can manufacturing department, large earth-moving equipment).

Secondary Functions:

  • Assume other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Custodial Operations Manager and Senior Director of Facilities Operations.



  • Knowledge of proper methods, techniques, materials, disinfectants, tools and equipment used in modern custodial work.

  • Ability to use, operate and maintain custodial equipment, and ability to troubleshoot and provide minor maintenance services for custodial equipment.

Education & Work Experience:


  • Minimum 2 years of experience in custodial and grounds-keeping services.
  • Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience.
  • Working knowledge of custodial equipment and practices.


  • Bilingual - Spanish/English.
  • Experience working with volunteers.
