The position will have responsibility for facilitating activities with visitors within labs and halls.  In addition, they will participate on some grant-related work such as Designing our Tomorrow, to provide the perspective of a professional informal STEM educator on the development of the project deliverables and the implementation of activity facilitation.


Participate in programs/initiatives to enhance corporate culture, such as:

  • Working effectively with and supporting volunteers throughout the organization.
  • Supporting OMSI's Total Guest Experience (TGE)/Customer Service mission & objectives in daily job performance, including diversity initiatives.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Facilitate engineering related exhibits with OMSI visitors in English and Spanish.
  • Deliver Museum Education programming, including conducting labs.
  • Work with data collection team to discuss interactions with visitors
  • Work with the research team to identify promising facilitation strategies and exhibit modifications.
  • Provide insights on working with Hispanic families and help to develop facilitation approaches for non-Spanish speaking staff members.
  • Coordinate site logistics for demonstrations or activity station.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for visitors and staff.
  • This position is non-exempt, paid hourly
  • This position is on-call, scheduled to work <19 hours per week or less.


Working Conditions:

  • Schedule is determined based on Designing Our Tomorrow project; expected to work varying hours between 9:30 AM 5:30 PM, Monday Sunday with possibility for some evening events.
  • Physical Demands: 10% Sitting 75% Standing 15% Lifting/Carrying/Pushing/Pulling 10-30 Pounds
  • Vision requirements include close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point), depth and perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distance and spatial relationships), and ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus).
  • Work environment includes work near moving mechanical parts, work in high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, wet or humid conditions (non-weather), outdoor weather conditions, extreme cold (non-weather), extreme heat (non-weather), risk of electric shock, work with explosives, vibration.
  • Noise level is loud (examples: metal can manufacturing department, large earth-moving equipment).


Secondary Functions: 

  • Attend Designing Our Tomorrow core team meetings as required.
  • Assume tasks and responsibilities as required by Director of Guest Engagement and Natural Sciences and Administration Manager.




  • Extensive experience and familiarity with Latino culture
  • Ability to follow basic instructions.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Professional communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Excellent coordination and project management skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to present science process and content in an engaging way to a broad age range.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and protocol.


Education and Work experience: 


  • BA/BS in science, education, or communications or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working with the public in formal or informal educational settings.
  • Working knowledge of scientific content.



  • Experience working with volunteers.


Additional Requirements/Preferences; Including Licenses and Certifications:  


  • Pre-employment checks such as a criminal background check and reference checks.



  • Current CPR and first aid certification.
