Job Summary:

The Events Educator is responsible for preparing and delivering a variety of science educations programs at the museum and in the community. The Events Educator works directly as a science educator at events, develops and delivers programs, coordinates staff and projects, and takes responsibility for scientific accuracy in the activities presented at events. Events include OMSI After Dark, Science Pubs, lectures, forums, workshops, conferences, classes, member nights, after-hours corporate events, OMSI's annual fundraising Gala, and other similar functions.


Participate in programs/initiatives to enhance corporate culture, such as:

  • Working effectively with and supporting volunteers throughout the organization
  • Supporting OMSI's Total Guest Experience (TGE)/Customer Service mission & objectives in daily job performance, including diversity initiatives 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

"Performing the following may involve driving to various locations outside OMSI's corporate headquarters:"

  • Develop, deliver, and assume responsibilities for demonstrations and activities at OMSI events.
  • Coordinate, train, and mentor the paid and volunteer staff working at events.
  • Assume responsibility for the integrity and appearance of educational programs at events.
  • Deliver and present OMSI programs in an engaging and enthusiastic manner.
  • Recommend and track expenditures within the assigned budget, including ordering of supplies and equipment maintenance.
  • Interact with visitors to help them explore and learn from educational programming.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for visitors and staff.
  • Keep current in science and education, and serve as an internal and external resource.
  • Work with the events team on conceptualization and development of educational content for OMSI events that maintains high standards of scientific accuracy and educational appropriateness.
  • Develop and facilitate involvement of community partners in development and delivery of events, including educational partners and service vendors.
  • Manage the structuring and maintenance of communication with internal and external partners regarding OMSI events.
  • Work with the Marketing team in representing OMSI events to the media, as applicable
  • This position is non-exempt, paid hourly   
  • This position is regular full-time  


Working Conditions:  

  • Must work an adjusted work schedule as needed to meet the demands of the position, including occasional early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
  • Traveling requirements include traveling to community sites in Oregon and SW Washington and delivering engaging Science Education programming, including being able to travel up to three days at a time.
  • Physical Demands: 55% Sitting 35% Standing 10% Lifting/Carrying/Pushing/Pulling 40 Pounds   
  • Vision requirements include close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point), depth and perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distance and spatial relationships), and ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus).
  • Noise level ranges from moderate (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic) to loud (examples: metal can manufacturing department, large earth-moving equipment).

Education & Work Experience:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Science or Education, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of coordination and project management skills.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working with the public in formal and informal settings.
  • Minimum 1 year experience in program training and delivery


  • Bilingual - Spanish/English.
  • Experience working with volunteers.

Additional Requirements/Preferences; Including Licenses and Certifications:


  • Valid driver's license.
  • Pre-employment checks, such as criminal background check, reference checks, and requirements in the MVR Policy including passing Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check.
