Responsible for all aspects of the presentation of week long, topic specific, science classes held in a variety of settings and locations.

Participate in programs/initiatives to enhance corporate culture, such as:

  • Working effectively with and supporting volunteers, throughout the organization.
  • Supporting OMSI's Total Guest Experience (TGE)/Customer Service mission & objectives in daily job performance, including diversity initiatives

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop or modify curriculum.
  • Prepare classroom to provide a stimulating learning environment.
  • Work cooperatively with instructors, assistants, volunteers, and coordinators.
  • Communicate with diverse audiences and present lively and entertaining science programs.
  • Present organized, interesting, and enthusiastic science lessons based on prepare curriculum or self-produced material.
  • Encourage students' natural curiosity by allowing time for student exploration.
  • Arrange classroom before and after class.
  • Communicate regularly with instructors, parents and coordinators, and program manager.
  • This position is exempt, paid salaried
  • This position is special project, working 40 hours/week.

Working Conditions:

  • This position is generally open from June to September.
  • Physical Demands: 10% Sitting 40% Standing   50% Lifting/Carrying/Pushing/Pulling  50 Pounds
  • Vision requirements include close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point), depth and perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distance and spatial relationships), and ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus).
  • Work environment includes wet or humid conditions (non-weather), work near moving mechanical parts, work in high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outdoor weather conditions
  • Noise level ranges from very quiet (examples: forest trail, isolation booth for hearing test) to very loud (examples: jack hammer work, front row at rock concert).

Secondary Functions:

  • Assume other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Classes and Traveling Programs Assistant Manager.



  • Working knowledge of (and demonstrated enthusiasm for) either educational or scientific disciplines.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and customer service skills.
  • Specific experience related to class topics.
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to details
  • Visual, perceptual, cognitive and judgment ability in order to recognize and respond appropriately to safety and security issues
  • Ability to follow basic instructions.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.

Education & Work Experience:


  • Bachelor Degree in either education or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum one year of teaching experience.
  • Working knowledge of current state of Oregon educational curriculum standards.
  • Minimum 2 years of teaching experience or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Minimum 1 year of informal experience in teaching informal science education.


  • Experience in museum, camp, or other related, non-traditional education settings
  • Bilingual - Spanish/English.
  • Experience working with volunteers.

Additional Requirements/Preferences; Including Licenses and Certifications:


  • Pre-employment checks, such as criminal background check and reference checks.
  • Current CPR and first aid certification required (training can be provided at cost to the employee).


  • Current Oregon or Washington teaching License.
