Provide for the transportation of students participating in field trips associated with OMSI's science classes. 

Participate in programs/initiatives to enhance corporate culture, such as:

  • Working effectively with and supporting volunteers throughout the organization
  • Supporting OMSI's Total Guest Experience (TGE)/Customer Service mission & objectives in daily job performance, including diversity initiatives

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Performing the following will involve driving to various locations outside OMSI's corporate headquarters:

  • Responsible for the safe transportation of students to field trip sites around Oregon and Washington.
  • Responsible for student management while on the road.
  • Responsible for all paperwork and minor maintenance associated with the operation of school buses.
  • This position is non-exempt, paid  hourly   
  • This position is special project, scheduled for 30 hours/week.

Working Conditions

  • This position is generally open from June to September.
  • Physical Demands: 60% Sitting 25% Standing   5% Lifting/Carrying/Pushing/Pulling up to 30 Pounds
  • Physical ability to drive a bus, van or car
  • Vision requirements include close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point), depth and perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distance and spatial relationships), and ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus).
  • Work environment includes wet or humid conditions (non-weather), work near moving mechanical parts, work in high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outdoor weather conditions
  • Noise level ranges from moderate (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic), to very loud (examples: jack hammer work, front row at rock concert).

Secondary Functions:

  • Assist classroom staff with student management while on field trips on occasion.



  • Ability to follow basic instructions.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Professional communication skills, both written and oral, including both students and staff.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Excellent coordination and project management skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and protocol.

Education & Work Experience:


  • High School diploma or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Working knowledge of driving a bus and/or van.
  • Minimum two (2) years experience driving school bus


  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Bilingual - Spanish/English.
  • Experience working with volunteers.

Additional Requirements/Preferences; Including Licenses and Certifications:


  • Valid class B commercial driver's license (with passenger and air brake endorsements) with a clean driving record.
  • Current CPR and first aid certification (training can be provided at cost of employee).
  • Pre-employment checks such as a criminal background check, reference checks, requirements in the MVR Policy including passing Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check and Alcohol & Drug Test for the CDL Drivers Policy, including pre-employment drug test.
