Responsible for all aspects of either before or after care programming associated with the Science Classes program, including the provision of structured, science related crafts and games. 

Participate in programs/initiatives to enhance corporate culture, such as:

  • Working effectively with and supporting volunteers throughout the organization
  • Supporting OMSI's Total Guest Experience (TGE)/Customer Service mission & objectives in daily job performance, including diversity initiatives

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Prepare classroom to provide a stimulating learning environment.
  • Work cooperatively with instructors, assistants, volunteers, and coordinators.
  • Communicate with diverse audiences and maintain strong customer service skills.
  • Present organized, interesting, and enthusiastic science related activities based on prepared curriculum or self-produced material.
  • Encourage students' natural curiosity by allowing the time and resources necessary for student explorations.
  • Manage students in a classroom environment
  • Prepare activities, and arrange classroom before and after class.
  • This position is non-exempt, paid hourly   
  • This position is special project, working 30 hours/week.

Working Conditions: 

  • This position is generally open from June to September.
  • Physical Demands: 10% Sitting 70% Standing  20% Lifting/Carrying/Pushing/Pulling  30 Pounds
  • Vision requirements include close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point), depth and perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distance and spatial relationships), and ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus).
  • Work environment includes wet or humid conditions (non-weather), work near moving mechanical parts, work in high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions
  • Noise level ranges from very quiet (examples: forest trail, isolation booth for hearing test) to very loud (examples: jack hammer work, front row at rock concert).   

Secondary Functions:

  • Be extremely aware of safety and security issues.
  • Communicate regularly with instructors, parents and coordinators.
  • Assume other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Classes and Traveling Programs Assistant Manager.



  • Ability to follow basic instructions.
  • Good customer service skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and protocol.
  • Working knowledge of (and demonstrated enthusiasm for) either educational or scientific disciplines.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and customer service skills.

Education & Work Experience:


  • High School diploma or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Working knowledge of a science or education oriented field.
  • Minimum 1 year of teaching or child-care experience.


  • Experience in museum, camp, or other related, non-traditional education settings.
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Bilingual - Spanish/English.
  • Experience working with volunteers.

Additional Requirements/Preferences; Including Licenses and Certifications:


  • Pre-employment checks, such as criminal background check and reference checks.
  • Current CPR and first aid certification (training can be provided at cost to the employee).


  • Current Oregon or Washington teaching license
