Assist Classes Instructor in the presentation of weeklong, topic specific, science day classes in various settings.

Participate in programs/initiatives to enhance corporate culture, such as:

  • Working effectively with and supporting volunteers throughout the organization
  • Supporting OMSI's Total Guest Experience (TGE)/Customer Service mission & objectives in daily job performance, including diversity initiatives                              

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist teacher with classroom management by modeling appropriate behavior.
  • Assist teacher with classroom management by actively engaging students in activities and intervening when directed by instructor.
  • Work cooperatively with instructors, coordinators, assistants and volunteers.
  • Communicate with diverse audiences and assist in the presentation of lively and entertaining science programs.
  • Facilitate hands on science activities.
  • Assist in classroom set-up, clean up and maintenance of a safe learning environment.
  • Teach/Lead science activities, demonstrations and projects with help of lead instructor.
  • Facilitate safety and learning while chaperoning field trips.
  • This position is non-exempt, paid hourly  
  • This position is special project , scheduled for 40 hours/week

Working Conditions

  • This position is generally open from June to September.
  • Physical demands: 10% Sitting 70% Standing  20% Lifting/Carrying/Pushing/Pulling up to 30 Pounds
  • Vision requirements include close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point), depth and perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distance and spatial relationships), and ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus).
  • Work environment includes wet or humid conditions (non-weather), work near moving mechanical parts, work in high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outdoor weather conditions.
  • Noise level ranges from very quiet (examples: forest trail, isolation booth for hearing test), to very loud (examples: jack hammer work, front row at rock concert).

Secondary Functions:

  • Communicate regularly with teachers, parents and coordinators.
  • Assume other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by Classes Lead Instructors or Classes and Traveling Programs Assistant Manager.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Requirements:

  • Ability to follow basic instructions.
  • Good customer service skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and protocol.

Education & Work Experience:

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Working knowledge of a science or education oriented field.
  • Minimum 1 year experience supervising, tutoring or teaching students in at least one of the age levels from pre-school through eighth grade.

Preferences:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Experience in a museum, camp, or other related, non-traditional settings.
  • Bilingual - Spanish/English.
  • Experience working with volunteers.

Additional Requirements/Preferences; Including Licenses and Certifications:

Requirements:

  • Current CPR and first aid certification (training can be provided at the cost of the employee).
  • Pre-employment checks, such as criminal background check and reference checks.
