The Research and Evaluation Assistant provides assistance on research and evaluation activities including the development and implementation of research and evaluation plans, protocols, data analysis and interpretation and reporting. Activities will support exhibit, programs and division's administration and development.

 

Participate in programs/initiatives to enhance corporate culture, such as:

  • Working effectively with and supporting volunteers throughout the organization.
  • Supporting OMSI's Total Guest Experience (TGE)/Customer Service mission & objectives in daily job performance, including diversity initiatives.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Functions

  • Support the facilitation of division and project operations and logistics.
  • Assist in the development of research and evaluation instruments.
  • Participate in the preparation and execution of data collection and analysis activities including literature reviews, data collection, and data analysis as assigned.
  • Compile preliminary research and evaluation findings.
  • Support reporting and dissemination processes.
  • Support the development of project proposals.

 

Practices

  • Support ethical treatment of human evaluation and research subjects. Complete related training as required.
  • Support accessibility and inclusion.
  • Support fiscal responsibility.
  • Support practices for gathering evidence for informed decisions and actions.
  • This position is non-exempt, paid hourly.
  • This position is on-call, scheduled for 19 hours/week.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Flexibility to modify work schedule such as working extended hours as needed; assume some evening, weekend, and holiday work.

  • Tasks generally require: close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point), depth and perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distance and spatial relationships), and ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus). Accommodations for impaired visual abilities can be discussed.
  • Work environment will occasionally include proximity to moving mechanical parts and outdoor weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold.
  • The noise in work environments is generally moderate (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic, museum exhibits and crowds) and occasionally loud (examples: exhibit shop machinery).

 

Secondary Functions:

  • Serve as a team member on OMSI projects and committees as assigned.
  • Assume other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Research and Evaluation Supervisor.
  • Work with and support volunteers throughout the museum

Research and Evaluation Methods and Analysis

  • Basic knowledge of experimental design and data collection methods
  • Basic knowledge of qualitative data collection methods and analysis
  • Basic understanding of descriptive and inferential statistics
  • Hands-on experience with word processing, spreadsheet analysis, database management, statistical software, computer graphics, and electronic data collection tools and demonstrated proficiency with at least two of these software types.

Principles and Practices of Informal Learning Environments and Participant Behavior

  • Demonstrated experience advocating for the accessibility, inclusion and safety of educational experiences.

 

Preferences:

  • Basic understanding of participant research.
  • Basic understanding of museum experiences (exhibits and programs).
  • Basic understanding of science, technology, engineering, and math learning.
  • Basic understanding of SPSS statistical analysis software.
  • Basic understanding of user-friendly text formatting and 2-D and 3-D design

 

Education & Work Experience:

Requirements:

Research and Evaluation Methods and Analysis

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in sciences, behavior, museum studies, education, communications, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated basic experience in behavioral research (e.g. literature searches, data collection, data management, data analysis, data interpretation, and data reporting.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience working with the public, formal and informal settings.
  • Minimum 1 year of coordination skills.

 

Preferences:

  • Previous experience in museum research and evaluation.
  • Project management skills.
  • Experience working with people in a public venue.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish.
