At OMSI, our mission is to excite children and families about creative problem solving, experimenting, and collaborating to stimulate informed action focusing on informal STEM and STEAM education metrics. OMSI strives to create opportunities for informed action through our museum experiences and educational programming. The Experience Design Manager is both a designer and manager within our Exhibits team, comprised of artists, designers, master craftspeople and engineers, design and develop exhibits and experiences that inspire wonder, curiosity and exploration.

This role is responsible for managing concept development for projects, ranging from 2D to 3D to CNC prep files, all while working in collaboration with other project stakeholders around the museum to synthesize all interests in the design of projects. In addition to engaging and managing an array of design staff, contractors, interns, and creative partnerships, the manager acts as creative support for other divisions and departments at OMSI, including contributing to front end ideation in support of grant funded and new project proposals.   

Participate in programs/initiatives to enhance corporate culture, such as:

  • Working effectively with and supporting volunteers throughout the organization
  • Supporting OMSI's Total Guest Experience (TGE)/Customer Service mission & objectives in daily job performance, including diversity initiatives.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

"Performing the following will involve driving to various locations outside OMSI's corporate headquarters:"

  • Manage and lead design for the Creative Services division; work to include 3D design (Sketchup, Autocad/Solidworks, and rendering programs) and 2D design (graphics, illustration, copy and layout.
  • Manage the Creative Services Design budgets to ensure a strategic and efficient use of resources including talent allocation on projects. Streamline estimating processes and production to ensure competitive bids.
  • Develop and update business plans and models, including projections.
  • Drive overall creative quality management for exhibit design, prototyping, and testing in conjunction with fabrication, program developers, exhibit developers and other project-specific stakeholders
  • Supervise, direct, and manage activities of the creative services design team to ensure timely, accurate, and on budget completion of assignments, including assigning workflow priorities, monitoring project budgets, hiring, and conducting performance management and evaluations of the Creative Services design team.
  • Work seamlessly with the Exhibits Shop Operations Manager to ensure clear and consistent communications around workflow, budget, and deadlines.
  • In collaboration with the Creative Director and Project Management Office, develop, implement, and promote the use of new models, processes, methodologies, tools, training, and best practices across OMSI engaged in exhibits projects. Create feedback mechanisms for continual improvement.
  • Develop, manage and continually improve creative process strategies, proposals and budgets for the design team
  • Collaborate with marketing, exhibits, and facilities to provide consistent creative direction supporting OMSI's brand, museum wayfinding, and the layout of spaces inside and outside the museum to further enhance guest experience (in cooperation with the Creative Director and the senior leadership at OMSI)
  • Project manage, schedule, and monitor Creative Services design projects, including development and management of contracts with vendors and contractors
  • Manage the ordering and tracking of all design related purchases
  • Manage design-related equipment, including staff training, use, and managing maintenance and service contracts
  • Collaborate with and support the Creative Director, the Director of Exhibit Business Development, and other OMSI stakeholders to help build capacity to attract and deliver third party sales projects, including developing design estimates for projects
  • Proactively inspire the Design team to seek and meet new challenges that benefit the team and the museum
  • This position is exempt, paid salaried.
  • This position is regular full-time,  scheduled for 40 hours/week.

Working Conditions

  • Vision requirements include close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point), Depth and perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distance and spatial relationships), and have the ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus)
  • Working environment will include working near moving mechanical parts
  • Noise level ranges from moderate (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic) to loud (examples: metal can manufacturing, department, large earth-moving equipment)

Secondary Functions:

  • Assume other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Creative Director, including growing and diversifying the OMSI subcontractor and vendor roster; and building a robust internship and volunteer program.

  • Highest level of proficiency in in 3D software to include SketchUp and SolidWorks (or other approved 3D software program)
  • High level proficiency in 2D design and layout; fluent in Adobe creative suite, specifically Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign

  • Excellent attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to work independently as well as in teams

  • Knowledge of laser engraving and CNC (CAD/CAM) operations.

Education & Work Experience:


  • Bachelor's Degree of Art, Design, Architecture, Industrial Design, or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Minimum years of coordination and project management in designing of experiences and exhibits.
  • Minimum 3 year of supervisory experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of informal experience in informal science education and/or the museum field.
  • Minimum 2 years managing/directing designers.


  • Experience working with the public, formal and informal settings.
  • Product development.
  • Bilingual - Spanish/English.
  • Experience working with volunteers.

  • Valid driver's license.
