The Major Gifts Officer is responsible for building and maintaining a portfolio of major donors to help OMSI achieve its strategic and operating goals. This position will work closely with members of the Development team on the identification, solicitation, cultivation, and stewardship of major donors and prospects. He or she will play an important role in developing a strong donor-centric culture across the museum, with the opportunity to focus on planned giving.

The Major Gifts Officer will also participate in programs/initiatives to enhance corporate culture, such as:

  • Working effectively with and supporting volunteers throughout the organization.
  • Supporting OMSI's Total Guest Experience (TGE)/Customer Service mission and objectives in daily job performance, including diversity initiatives.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: 

Performing the following will involve driving to various locations outside OMSI's corporate headquarters.

  • Develop and manage a portfolio of 75-150+ current and prospective donors; solicit and close major gifts ($5,000-$25,000).
  • Prepare solicitation strategies and plans for meetings with individual major gift donors and prospects.
  • Conduct one-to-one cultivation, solicitation and stewardship meetings with donors and prospects.
  • Use "moves management" to motivate donors and prospects to make annual, special project, and planned gifts to OMSI.
  • Participate in planning and executing OMSI's signature fundraising event, the annual Gala, and other donor cultivation events.
  • Participate in staff meetings, meetings with other departments across OMSI, and other administrative work of the department as necessary.
  • Participate in implementing consistent donor messaging through various communication channels.
  • Manage special projects as assigned by Director of Development and/or VP.
  • Keep up-to-date on donor cultivation best practices as they pertain to major gifts.
  • This position is exempt, paid salaried  
  • This position is regular full-time, working 40 hours/week.

Secondary Functions:

  • Attend events and provide on-site assistance at events as necessary.
  • Assume other responsibilities and tasks assigned by the VP of Development and Director of Development.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Requirements:

  • Proven success in soliciting and closing major gifts.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize to meet goals, work well under pressure with a high degree of accuracy, and meet stringent and overlapping deadlines.
  • Superior interpersonal, written and verbal communication to effectively build relationships with people of diverse talents and backgrounds.
  • Professionalism and commitment to confidentiality and diplomacy.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team.
  • Knowledge of fundraising database systems.

Preferences:

  • Nonprofit experience.
  • Experience in Salesforce or other relationship management database program.
  • Experience soliciting planned gifts.

Education & Work Experience:

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Minimum 5 years of development experience, preferably raising major gifts ($5,000+).
  • Minimum 4 years of progressive project management, including staff/volunteer supervision, and budget responsibility.
  • Experience using Moves Management.

Preferences:

  • Bilingual - Spanish/English.
  • Experience working with volunteers.
  • Knowledge of planned giving best practices.

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Pre-employment checks, such as criminal background check and reference checks.

Preferences:

  • CFRE certification.
