The Lead Custodian position provides custodial, maintenance and grounds keeping support for OMSI's facilities and requires weekend and holiday work.   The position reports to the Custodial Manager and assists in supervising the activities of the Custodial crew.

Participate in programs/initiatives to enhance corporate culture, such as:

  • Working effectively with and supporting volunteers throughout the organization
  • Supporting OMSI's Total Guest Experience (TGE)/Customer Service mission & objectives in daily job performance, including diversity initiatives

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide general custodial, maintenance and grounds keeping as assigned utilizing best practice for safety, efficiency, and environmental concerns.
  • Provide support services for activities and events as scheduled and/or assigned.
  • Help oversee the duties, schedules and activities of the custodial crew.
  • Maintain supply closets and assist in the management of supplies, which includes monitoring consumption and anticipating order requirements.
  • Have a general awareness of security protocols and assist in any procedures as delegated.
  • Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment.
  • Act as department liaison in the absence of the Custodial Manager and Senior Director of Facilities Operations.
  • Serve as positive role model and leader for custodial staff.
  • Train, supervise and provide input for evaluation of custodial staff.
  • Coordinate custodial staff scheduling with Custodial Manager.
  • This position is non-exempt, paid hourly.
  • This position is regular full-time, scheduled for 40 hours/week.

Working Conditions:

  • Requires a 5-day work week, working 8 AM 4:30 PM, including weekends and holidays.
  • Flexibility in work schedule to accommodate activities and events.
  • Physical Demands: 10% Sitting 40% Standing 50% Lifting/Carrying/Pushing/Pulling up to 50 Pounds
  • Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), Peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point), Depth and perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distance and spatial relationships), Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus).
  • Work environment includes wet or humid conditions (non-weather), work near moving mechanical parts, work in high, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, vibration.
  • Noise level ranges from moderate (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic) to loud (examples: metal can manufacturing department, large earth-moving equipment).

Secondary Functions:

  • Assume other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Custodial Manager.



  • Working knowledge of floor care, general cleaning and restroom sanitizing procedures.
  • Ability to use, operate and maintain custodial equipment.
  • Working knowledge of equipment, procedures and supplies.
  • Understanding of generally accepted custodial practices, procedures and supply usage.
  • General mechanical aptitude, ability to troubleshoot and provide minor maintenance services for custodial equipment.
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model and leader for the custodial crew.
  • Must be able to promote workplace safety and encourage participation in environmental practices throughout the museum.
  • Ability to follow basic instructions.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Professional communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Excellent coordination and project management skills.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and protocol.


  • Experience with ordering supplies preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.

Education & Work Experience:


  • Associates Degree or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Working knowledge of custodial equipment and practices.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in custodial and grounds-keeping services.
  • Minimum 1 year of informal experience in custodial equipment and practices.


  • Bilingual - Spanish/English.
  • Experience working with volunteers.
