This position will provide assistance in maintaining, repairing and supporting OMSI's Water Avenue exhibits under the direction of an Exhibit Operation Strategist. 

Participate in programs/initiatives to enhance corporate culture, such as:

  • Working effectively with and supporting volunteers throughout the organization.
  • Supporting OMSIs Total Guest Experience (TGE)/Customer Service mission & objectives in daily job performance, including diversity initiatives.  

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Performing the following will involve driving outside OMSIs corporate headquarters and/or driving OMSI vehicles, to include rented vehicles up to 25,000 lbs. gross weight:

  • Maintain, repair, upgrade and modify OMSIs permanent & temporary exhibits through design and fabrication of cabinetry, mechanical, electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic components to achieve quality presentation standards.
  • Document corrective and preventive maintenance records and make recommendations for exhibit upgrades.
  • Respond to inquiries, questions and concerns from guests, staff and other museums.
  • Work with and support volunteers throughout the museum.
  • This position is  non-exempt, paid hourly
  • This position is on-call, scheduled for 19 hours or less per week.

Working Conditions:  

  • Physical Demands: 20 % Sitting   70 % Standing 10 % Lifting/Carrying/Pushing/Pulling 50
  • Vision requirements include close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point), depth and perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distance and spatial relationships), and ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus).
  • Work environment includes working near moving mechanical parts, work in high, precarious places, and risk of electric shock.
  • Moderate noise levels.

Secondary Functions:

  • Assist in warehouse organization and tasks for temporary exhibits at OMSI including: load, unload trucks, move, pack, unpack crates, operate warehouse machinery and tools and maintain spare parts inventories and related documentation.
  • Assume other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Exhibit Experiences.

  • Knowledge of exhibit fabrication, maintenance and repair techniques and materials including those for video and sound systems.
  • Knowledge of mechanical drives, electrical components, hydraulic, pneumatic and electronics as they relate to exhibit construction and repair.
  • Computer experience including but not limited to hardware and software troubleshooting,
  • Ability to operate common hand type machine tools to form and finish metal, plastics, wood and other diverse materials.
  • Ability to read blueprints and shop drawings and sketch or produce drawings.
  • Ability to operate scissor lifts and other exhibit moving equipment.

Education & Work Experience:


  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Minimum 1 year of coordination and project management skills.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience working with the public, formal and informal settings.
  • Minimum 2 years experience in fabrication or maintenance of mechanical and electronic interactive exhibits.
  • Minimum 2 years related technical and customer service management experience.


  • Experience in fabrication and/or maintenance of mechanical and electronic interactive exhibits.
  • Experience in proper handling of art and artifacts to include packing/unpacking, documentation, and installation.
  • Experience installing simple lighting, video and sound systems.
  • Bilingual - Spanish/English.
  • Experience working with volunteers.

  • Valid drivers license
  • Pre-employment checks such as criminal background check, reference checks, and requirements in the MVR Policy including passing the Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check.
