The Custodial Manager will provide supervision and management of all custodial services and the staff responsible for delivering those services. This position also serves to assist the Senior Director of Facilities Operations in daily operational matters with primary responsibility for activity and event support. The Custodial Manager reports directly to the Senior Director of Facilities Operations.

  • Working effectively with and supporting volunteers throughout the organization
  • Supporting OMSI's Total Guest Experience (TGE)/Customer Service mission & objectives in daily job performance, including diversity initiatives

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supervise all custodial personnel in the performance of their duties.
  • Assist in delivering a comprehensive custodial service program that includes technical training, personnel assessment, site assessment, planning, personnel advancement, and measurements of program progress.
  • Ensure that all department support requirements for events and activities are met to the highest standards including coordinating efforts with event sales, marketing, and food service staff.
  • Provide necessary training in all custodial procedures and duties for all responsible employees.
  • Conduct and complete hiring, evaluation, and termination of custodial personnel in a fair and impartial manner.
  • Assist the Senior Director of Facilities Operations in the creation and management of the custodial budget.
  • Supervise assigned personnel, conduct annual performance appraisals and make recommendations for appropriate employment actions.
  • Serve as department liaison when the Senior Director of Facilities Operations is not present, especially on weekends. Responsibilities may include parking management and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain and promote sustainability measures and initiatives.
  • Assist Senior Director in planning for long range OMSI needs and goals.
  • Develop, publish and distribute custodial-based training materials.
  • Receive and coordinate work orders submitted for custodial staff.
  • Make key on-the-spot management decisions for Custodial Supervisor and keep Custodial Supervisor informed of impending management issues that need to be resolved.
  • Follow-up on daily custodial inspection reports to ensure that proper corrective action has been taken.
  • Notify appropriate personnel when unsafe conditions appear.
  • Responsible for field testing, evaluation, and training of use of chemical product lines.
  • Represent OMSI in a positive and professional manner when dealing with vendors and contractors.
  • Keep informed and disseminate information about current research, trends and best practices in areas of responsibility.
  • Attend training sessions, conferences and workshops to keep abreast of current practices, programs and legal issues.
  • Prepare or oversee the preparation of all required reports and maintain all appropriate records.
  • Utilize appropriate strategies and problem-solving tools to make decisions regarding planning, utilization of funds, delivering services and evaluation of services provided.
  • Demonstrate initiative in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement and take appropriate action.
  • Perform IPM standards consistent with the goals and objectives of this position.
  • This position is exempt, paid salaried.
  • This position is regular full-time, scheduled for 40 hours/week.

Working Conditions

  • Requires a 5-day work week, working evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Flexibility in work schedule to accommodate activities and events.
  • Physical Demands: 50% Sitting  30% Standing  20% Lifting/Carrying/Pushing/Pulling  50 Pounds, with the ability to climb stairs and ladders.
  • Vision requirements include close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point), depth and perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distance and spatial relationships), and ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus).
  • Work environment includes wet or humid conditions (non-weather), work near moving mechanical parts, work in high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, vibration.
  • Noise level ranges from moderate (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic) to loud (examples: metal can manufacturing department, large earth-moving equipment).

Secondary Functions:

"Performing the following will involve driving to various locations outside OMSI's corporate headquarters:"

  • Use company vehicle to run errands and pick up supplies.
  • Assume other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Senior Director of Facilities Operations.

  • Ability to write purchase orders and make budget adjustments.
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently operate computerized work order system.

Preferences:

  • Nonprofit experience.
  • Museum or public institution experience.

Education & Work Experience:

Requirements:

  • Associate's Degree from an accredited educational institution or minimum five (5) years of successful management experience in facilities operations.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of successful experience in custodial or related work and at least two (2) years in supervision.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience working with the public, formal and informal settings.

Preferences:

  • Associate's Degree from an accredited educational institution in management or a facilities operations related field preferred.
  • Bilingual - Spanish/English.
  • Experience working with volunteers.

  • OSHA 10 certificate.
