At OMSI, our mission is to excite children and families about learning, experimenting, and exchanging ideas to stimulate informed action focusing on informal STEM education metrics. OMSI staff are engaged and globally aware. Staff work towards creating informed action through our museum experiences and educational programming. We aspire to take our exhibits and experiences to the next level. The Director of Exhibit Business Operations will bring experience in exhibit production and sales.  This position will partner closely with OMSI's Director of Creative Services and will lead the Exhibit Sales team to establish optimal resourcing plans and enable teams to effectively execute against plans by providing business insight and decision support through innovative reporting and analytics that drive continuous process improvement. He or she is responsible for managing the revenue generating Traveling and Exhibit Sales and Exhibit Fabrication teams. Responsibilities include oversight and the directing of activities associated with exhibit sales to include:  estimating, exhibit productions schedules, exhibition tour rentals, business development, market analysis, project management, client relations, management of contracts and licensed property, staff oversight and budget management.

Participate in programs/initiatives to enhance corporate culture, such as:

  • Working effectively with and supporting volunteers throughout the organization.
  • Supporting OMSI's Total Guest Experience (TGE)/Customer Service mission & objectives in daily job performance, including diversity initiatives.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

"Performing the following will involve driving to various locations outside OMSI's corporate headquarters:"


  • Direct activities and manage staff of OMSI's revenue generating traveling exhibit program including exhibition rentals, promotion, business and product development, strategic planning, contract and budget management, market research and analysis, management of multiple exhibit projects and tours, exhibit planning, licensed property management, customer service, and coordination of program activities with other departments and sponsors.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Creative Services and Project Management Office, develop, implement, and promote the use of new models, processes, methodologies, tools, training, and best practices across OMSI engaged in exhibits projects. Create feedback mechanisms for continual improvement.
  • Manage the Exhibit design/production/project budgets to ensure a strategic and efficient use of resources including talent allocation on projects. Streamline estimating processes and production to ensure competitive bids. Develop and update business plans and models including projections.
  • Develop, implement, and manage long and short term strategic business plans and budgets.
  • Develop and implement standards, procedures and systems to optimize program efficiencies. Work closely with cross functional program managers to ensure effective results.
  • Research and identify industry needs and trends through various methods including surveys, client discussions, conferences, professional networks, etc. Recommend exhibition topics and standards to maximize OMSI's brand, marketability, and revenue potential through traveling exhibitions.
  • Manage international and national sales efforts, plan strategies and priorities to maximize net revenues, and evaluate results.
  • Collaborate with Marketing Department staff in the development of marketing plans and marketing collateral, marketing kits, promotional videos, photography shoots, e-blasts, newsletters, websites, conference and trade show materials. Promote OMSI exhibitions and brand.
  • Negotiate license agreements with corporate property owners as well as other legal contracts to enhance exhibition product marketability.
  • Cultivate and attract new talent to the Sales team, Fabrication production team and Traveling Exhibits Technical Support.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate division goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
  • Respond to inquiries from the public, staff, and other museums and maintain a high standard of customer service.
  • Represent OMSI and promote exhibitions at both national and international exhibit conferences and events.
  • Field and develop new business opportunities including third-party sales and partnerships to achieve OMSI's strategic objectives and support mission-based and financial outcomes.
  • Participates as a key member of the management team in achieving business plan goals and objectives.
  • This position is exempt, paid salaried.
  • This position is regular full-time, scheduled for 40 hours/week.

Working Conditions: 

  • Annual travel one to two times per year in support of museum conference sales booth.
  • Possible work on evenings, weekends, and holidays in support of organization project needs.

  • Vision requirements include close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point), depth and perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distance and spatial relationships), and ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus).
  • Work environment includes; wet or humid conditions (non-weather), work near moving mechanical parts, work in high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outdoor weather conditions.
  • Noise level ranges from quiet (examples: library, private office), to very loud (examples: jack hammer work, front row at rock concert).

Secondary Functions:

  • Work with and support projects throughout the museum.
  • Assume other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Vice President of Learning Experiences.

Education & Work Experience:


  • Bachelor's degree, Business Administration, Marketing or Exhibit design and sales experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working with public, formal and informal setting.
  • Minimum 4 years' experience in the exhibits production field.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive program management experience including staff supervision, project management, marketing, sales, customer service, and budget responsibility.


  • Nonprofit Management or Business Management Experience.
  • Museum Sales or Exhibits Experience.
  • Expertise in database programs for financial analysis and reporting.
  • Bilingual - Spanish/English.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce software.
  • Master's degree preferred.
